[Vintage] Small Paulownia Wood Drawer Box
A small paulownia wood drawer box, perfectly sized to rest in the palm of your hand.
Made in Japan around the 1930s, it was likely used to store medicine, seals, or small personal items. The interior is finished in black lacquer, while the patina and texture shaped by time remain intact. A one-of-a-kind vintage piece.

A small paulownia wood drawer box that fits comfortably
in the palm of your hand.
Crafted in Japan around the 1930s,
it was a practical household storage piece,
likely used to keep medicine, seals, or small stationery items.
Though originally an everyday object,
its compact structure reveals a quiet balance and careful finishing.
The wood is believed to be paulownia,
known for its light weight and fine grain.
The interior is finished in black lacquer to help protect its contents.
Over time, natural patina and subtle signs of wear have added depth to its surface.
On the front, the original metal fittings remain
— a chrysanthemum-shaped (菊形) backplate with a ring pull,
a form commonly seen on small Japanese furniture of the modern period.
The chrysanthemum motif was widely used in decorative hardware of the time,
offering a restrained yet balanced design.
The gently oxidized surface of the metal has developed a texture
that cannot be artificially replicated.
The two drawers open smoothly, and despite its small scale,
the piece maintains a stable and well-balanced structure.
