Tea Ceremony Candy Container, Furidashi
This small wooden box was crafted
using a traditional joinery-based structure,
with wooden pegs applied to reinforce
and stabilize parts of the joinery.

The overall construction is based on fitted joinery,
and the corner joints reveal characteristics
associated with dovetail-style (sagye) joinery logic.

Rather than a fully formalized dovetail joint,
the structure appears to be a simplified
and adapted form of traditional joinery,
suited to a small, practical storage box.
The lid operates in a sliding (slip-lid) mechanism,
moving along grooves carved directly
into the wooden panels,
a construction well suited for
repeated everyday use.

Estimated Period & Background
The exact date and provenance of this box
are not documented.
However, based on the condition of the wood,
patterns of wear, and joinery techniques,
it is estimated to have been made
in the early 20th century as a utilitarian wooden box.
Traces resembling ink or seal paste residue
remain on the interior base and sides,
suggesting that it may once have been used
as a seal box or a container for writing tools,
such as personal seals or small stationery items.
Use & Function
This box does not impose a single, fixed function.
Rather, its size, structure, and signs of use suggest
that it was naturally suited for holding small,
frequently used personal items
on a desk or in a private study.
Currently, it may be used in the following ways:
º In a study: storing seals, paperweights, or small writing tools
º In a scent or incense setting: holding incense sticks or small accessories
º In daily life: organizing small personal belongings
º As an object: displayed on its own or alongside other wooden pieces
※ This piece prioritizes presence and structural beauty over storage capacity.
Condition
There is no structural damage,
and the joinery reinforced with
wooden pegs remains solid and stable.
Some surface wear is visible, including edge abrasion,
localized impressions,
and areas where the surface tone has
lightened over time.
These are natural signs of long-term use
and do not affect the structural integrity or function.
※ In consideration of its vintage nature, no artificial refinishing has been carried out.
For preservation, the surface has been lightly conditioned with a neutral, fragrance-free oil.
※ Please review the detailed images carefully before purchasing.

º Those who value structural completeness within small-scale objects
º Those who consider both practical use and thoughtful collecting
