Gongyeedam : the unheard stories about crafts
Category
The Ojuk Square Lamp was made using the stem of ojuk (black bamboo), also known as Wondaegung, as the pillar. The rough, but detailed texture of the mulberry fiber, a distinct ingredient of Hanji, traditional Korean paper, fuses with the ojuk stem to create an antique mood.

The Square Lamp ⓒNational Folk Museum of Korea
The Ojuk Square Lamp was created
by adopting the structure of the traditional square lamp,
such as the square, wooden frame, and the use of Hanji on all four sides.
We built the frame with ojuk (black bamboo), instead of wood,
and used mulberry fiber, an ingredient of Hanji, instead of Hanji itself,
in order to let light through the fibers to subtly fill the space.
We changed the design of the portable square lamp
to make an indoor lamp
that could be placed on the floor,
similar to that of indoor floor lamps from the Joseon era.

◆ Materials ◆
1. Ojuk
Because black bamboo, ojuk,
was considered to be sacred in the Joseon era,
it was not used as materials for crafts.
Bamboo that was dyed to look like ojuk was used instead.
By using this ojuk as the pillar of the square lamp,
we created a dignified and sophisticated design.
The ojuk stem (also called Wondaegung in the Chungcheong Province dialect),
a material mainly used for Jukjang, the main technique of ojuk crafts,
was used to build the four pillars of the Ojuk Square Lamp.
2. Chinese Mahogany Tree
Chinese mahogany tree is
traditionally used for building furniture in Korea.
It is strong and doesn’t get easily deformed
with changes in temperature or humidity.
The top and bottom panels of the Ojuk Square Lamp is
made with Chinese mahogany tree,
which blends well with ojuk.
This adds to the sturdiness and clean look of a piece of furniture to the lamp.
The top and bottom panels of Gongyeedam’s ‘Ojuk Square Lamp’ is
made with Chinese mahogany tree
produced by Mr. Sang Moo Shim, a cultural properties repairing-skilled person
and CEO of ImWood, a manufacturer of traditional wood furniture.
3. Mulberry Fiber
The delicate fibers of the mulberry fiber, the raw material used for Hanji,
makes the lamp’s light softer and fuller.
The mulberry fiber used in the ‘Ojuk Square Lamp’ is from
Andong Hanji, a specialty product from the city of Andong.
