These vintage blue-and-white porcelain pieces feature
softly diffused blue decoration in a muted blue-gray tone,
complemented by understated auspicious motifs.
One piece features a stylized flowering branch,
possibly depicting tree peony or herbaceous peony blossoms,
with flowers and leaves arranged along a single stem.
The other features a grapevine-like fruit motif,
with rounded fruits and leaves winding along a curling vine.
Both pieces can be displayed on their own
or used as stands for small objects.
The foot shows what appear to be marks
left by sand supports used during firing.
The softly bleeding cobalt
and muted blue-gray coloration
lend the pieces the unpretentious character of folk porcelain.
These making techniques
and color characteristics resemble those seen
in Qing-period folk and trade wares
associated with Jingdezhen,
and the pieces are therefore believed
to be of Chinese origin.
However, they also share stylistic affinities
with Japanese Arita wares made under the influence of
Chinese blue-and-white porcelain.
The exact kiln and date of production
therefore cannot be determined with certainty.
The bases of the two pieces
bear different square marks.
The grapevine piece bears a mark
resembling the auspicious phrase 'ๅฏ่ฒด้ทๆฅ',
associated with wishes for wealth and longevity.
The floral piece bears a square mark that
appears to contain the character '็ฆ',
meaning good fortune.
Even these softly blurred marks
add to the sense of history
and the layered story of East Asian ceramics.
Each is a one-of-a-kind piece,
and an identical restock in the same form
and decoration is unlikely.
