A set of five Japanese meimei plates
from the Showa period.
Set against the rich vermilion lacquer,
the turnip motif
—an auspicious symbol of prosperity
and abundance in Japanese tradition—

Originally used to serve
individual portions of sweets
or small dishes to each guest,
meimei plates have long been
appreciated in Japan
