This is a traditional Japanese tea-ceremony
candy container known as Furidashi,
originally used to serve sweets and confections
to guests during tea gatherings.
As its name suggests—meaning “to shake out”—
the container features a narrow opening designed
to prevent the contents from spilling out all at once,
allowing the sweets to be dispensed
gently and with control.
This piece is a vintage vessel
crafted in the style of Hagi-yaki,
characterized by the soft interplay
between its milky white glaze
and warm reddish clay body.
A geometric potter’s mark remains on the base,
adding to its authenticity as a small studio work.
The lid is made from woven corn husk,
shaped into a natural handle form,
creating a subtle harmony
between ceramic and plant-based materials,
a signature of traditional Japanese craft aesthetics.
Beyond its original purpose as a candy container,
this piece can also be used as a decorative object
for holding small items,
adding a quiet sense of character to any space.
