along with the incense burner.
Originally, they would hold small chopped pieces of the core of juniper wood
that were burnt as incense.
As incense sticks became more widely used,
incense boxes are slowly losing their utility and disappearing.
In Japan, they use incense boxes at tea parties
to spread the delicate scent of powdered incense
by displaying them with their lids open.
